The Fishers Arms

You may have heard that in our village, we are trying to do a community buy out of our pub, the Fishers Arms. A passionate campaign has been kick started and I am delighted to have been given the task of designing the interior, should we be successful.

Douglas and I arrived in this beautiful, tucked away village, just outside Berwick Upon Tweed, six months ago to a warm welcome from locals and we quickly became keen patrons at the local pub. Music nights were held weekly, and fun quiz sessions and delicious meals were regularly served.

The atmosphere was wonderful, but the décor was rather tired and dated and while enjoying the brilliant folk singing and delicious local beers, I would privately redesign the place in my head!

When the owner decided to sell up, the village pulled together at lightning speed and an impressive plan has been put in place to raise the money and buy it as a community. We want it to double as a café, as well as a pub, as it will be the perfect stop off for walkers and cyclists. There is an amazing amount of countryside and coastline, steeped in history, to explore in the area, so coffee, baking and light lunches will be served during the day.

We want the décor to reflect the incredible talent of the artists and designers who reside in this stunning part of the world.

I have put a mood board together and fabrics by local textile designers Peony & Sage, above, and Ellie Davison Archer, below, are all included.

Their work depicts wildflowers abundant in the area, fish and bumble bees, hinting at local history and the nearby, world famous Chain Bridge Honey Farm suppliers of Beeswax furniture polish to Baileys no less!

We will be able to enjoy flowers from Ginger House Garden, Horncliffe's very own flower farm, of course. Their stunning, organic, seasonal selections enhance almost all our shoots these days.

Fabric designers, wood turners and furniture makers, The Hare In Winter, based in the village, have designed a Horncliffe tartan to celebrate the project. Grey is for the silvery Tweed, blue is the blue of the net boats, red is for the colour of the local sandstone, yellow for the fields of golden corn. Their beautiful artisan spoons and home wares will be for sale in the pub of course.

The walls will serve as a gallery for work by local artists. The Fishers Arms, cafe, pub, gallery and live music venue will be a brilliant destination for visitors far and wide.

Horncliffe has until the end of March 2022 to raise the money required to purchase and refurbish the wonderful Fishers Arms and make it the hub of our village once again. The council have prevented it going on sale on the open market for this short window period, to help us preserve it.

You can either pledge money, shares are available at £500 each, or pledge your time, you might be able to help with decorating or joinery. We have an impressive total already - have a peek here!

A couple of local artists have donated prints and paintings.

Newcastle based artist, Aidan Doyle has given us a fabulous selection of contemporary pop up style mono prints. They sell on the open market at £850 each. We will be having an online auction of Aidan's and other artists work very soon and all money raised will go to our Fishers Arms fund.

Look out for this - you might very well pick up a bit of a bargain! And please get in touch if you are an artist who would like to contribute something.

Anyone who enjoys fishing in our beautiful village, might wish to help us out - your heavenly days here will be even better with a coffee and a scone in the morning, a bowl of soup at lunchtime and a few beers in the evening!
